I have experience working in
I have undertaken varying training opportunities over the years based primarily on understanding the psychological needs of children and young people struggling with the complexities associated with developmental trauma and disrupted attachments. I have over time endeavoured to integrate this training into my therapeutic practice to good effect and I welcome the opportunity to share the learning and development this has afforded me with others – I have to admit that I also enjoy the shared reflective experience that supervision brings as I find this develops everyone’s practice – mine included!.
I have worked for over 20 years within the field of children and families. 10 years as an Advanced Child Therapist within a CAMHS Looked After Children’s team and 10 years as a Therapist within the social services team - of which I am still part. Prior to this I was an Advanced Social work practitioner within a Family Support team, responsibility for staff supervision and development part of my role.
Within my therapeutic work I have worked extensively with children and young people who have experienced developmental trauma. I have worked with birth, adoptive and foster families offering both individual therapy and/or systemic therapy as is helpful.
Within individual work I utilise both non-directive and directive therapeutic approaches as is best suited to the individual child’s needs. This may incorporate Play therapy, Narrative therapy or Theraplay, or indeed a combination of such modalities to best suit identified need.
All of the work I undertake is child/family centred and when working with children and their family’s I will often utilise the MIMs attachment assessment as a starting point as I find this helps me to understand the attachment relationships within the family unit. This informative shared process often giving us a foundational base from which to develop and build our work upon.
I will always try to work with the family system when possible and this can mean incorporating a Filial and/or DDP approach to the work. Sometimes such systemic work may be incorporated alongside ongoing individual work as part of a therapeutic package of support.
Within my work, I also work closely with schools and other networks to support wider relational contexts and can provide training to foster parents, adopters, education staff and social workers as an ongoing process when considering the attachment needs of children and their families
Theoretical Approach
I undertake a person-centred approach to supervision. Individual Supervision only.

I have experience working in
With over 20 years’ experience working within a special school setting (8 as a teacher, 14 as a play therapist) working with children with learning difficulties, ADHD and Autistic spectrum conditions, I firmly believe that all children and young people should have access to appropriate therapeutic support that meets their needs. I have extensive experience of developing and adapting my practice to suit the differing needs of the children I work with. I have experience working with children who have a disability and who are also affected by ; loss (through bereavement and through family breakdown), abuse and neglect, trauma, being fostered or adopted, domestic abuse, having a parent in prison, selective mutism, anxiety or behavioural difficulties.
I can provide weekly non-directive play therapy sessions in my Jesmond playroom or in the child’s school. I value working closely with families and with other professionals (eg teachers, support staff, OTs, speech and language therapists, social workers) to develop an understanding of each child’s needs and to offer the best support we can. I offer training and support to families, schools and other organisations.
Theoretical Approach
Child -centred play therapy
