Fiona Couchman
Areas covered
Surrey, London
Qualifications
MA Play Therapy, BSc (Hons) Psychology
Theoretical approach
I have been trained as a child-centred play therapist, taking a very non-directive approach, and as a Gestalt play therapist, which is more directive. Underpinning both approaches is a belief that, given the right conditions for growth, every child will prosper and develop towards healthier functioning and integration. The goal of play therapy is to help the child develop a more positive self-concept, assume greater self-responsibility, become more self-accepting, and to develop his or her capacity to manage difficult feelings.

I have experience working in
Developmental trauma; attachment difficulties; adoption; children in care; domestic violence; schools. I work in A CAMHS specialist service and private practice.
In addition to my training in individual work with a child, I am trained in Filial therapy which is a unique combination of Play Therapy and Family Therapy. In Filial therapy I work with the parents or carers as true partners in the therapeutic process. Filial therapy recognises that most therapeutic work can happen at home. In this way it can strengthen existing bonds, prevent future difficulties, and help families work through bigger challenges in a playful and creative way.
I am also trained in Theraplay®, which is a child and family therapy for building and enhancing attachment, self-esteem, trust in others, and joyful engagement. It is based on the natural patterns of playful, healthy interaction between parent and child and is personal, physical, and fun.
I have DDP and PACE training . Dyadic Developmental Psychotherapy (DDP) is a treatment for families with adopted or fostered children who had experienced neglect and abuse in their birth families and suffered from significant developmental trauma.
DDP is based on and brings together attachment theory, what is understand about developmental trauma, the neurobiology of trauma, attachment and caregiving, intersubjectivity theory and child development.
I am a registered member of the British Association for Counselling and Professionals (BACP).
